Notes for Daniel Dunscombe Possible
Selections from DuVals of Kentucky from Virginia, 1794 — 1935, descendants and allied families by Margaret Gwin Buchanan (1937), page 125 (at left), and The National Cyclopaedia of American Biography, volume 18, by James T. White & Company (1922), page 234 second column (above).

Although direct proof of a family linkage from Samuel Dunscombe of Pembroke Tribe, Bermuda to Daniel Dunscomb of Manhattan is lacking, family tradition holds that the two are father and son. Bermuda and Manhattan records are spotty during the mid-to-late 1600s, when — it is supposed — Samuel Dunscombe journeyed to Manhattan, or his son Daniel Dunscomb went and settled there.

Due a burgeoning population on little land, opportunities in Bermuda became increasingly limited in the latter half of the 17th century. The Dunscombe family and their associates in Bermuda became involved in seafaring and trade as a consequence. Jeremiah Burgess of Hamilton Tribe, Bermuda, born about 1656, was a brother-in-law of Samuel Dunscombe. He was an example of this outward migration from Bermuda, as his will was probated both in Bermuda and in New York.

Daniel Dunscomb is thought to have died in the North Ward of Manhattan before 15 July 1699, when his estate, valued at five pounds, was assessed a tax of one shilling and two pence.

The estate of Daniel Dunscomb in the North Ward of Manhattan was also taxed further on a quarterly basis on 29 November 1699, 8 March 1699/1700, 8 June 1700, 9 September 1700, 28 December 1700 and 25 February 1700/01.

There was no listing for Daniel Dunscomb anywhere in Manhattan on the next tax list of 18 April 1702.

Beginning on 1 January 1702/03, Daniel Dunscomb (presumably the one who married Helena Swan) was taxed for a house in the North Ward.

NOTE: As the term "estate" was also used to indicate personal property in general (and not necessarily the taxable goods of a deceased person), it cannot be excluded that all Manhattan tax records for Daniel Dunscomb from 1699 onward are for the man who married Helena Swan at the Dutch Church in New York City on 8 July 1696.
